In Belgium, much of the country receives hard to very hard water — scaling of heating elements, boilers that heat less well, marked taps, dry skin. A water softener solves the problem, but poorly sized it wastes salt and water, and poorly chosen it disappoints. Here is how to choose the right one, without being oversold by a salesperson.

Do you really need to soften your water?

Hardness is measured in French degrees (°F). Below 15°F water is soft, between 15 and 25°F medium, above 25°F hard. Much of Flanders and Brussels sits around 30-40°F; some Walloon municipalities on limestone climb higher still.

Above 30°F, scaling is rapid: a boiler loses several percent of efficiency per year, heating elements fail, taps and shower walls get marked. Softening to 8-12°F (and not 0°F — water that is too soft is corrosive) protects the installation and reduces maintenance.

  • < 15°F: soft water, softener rarely useful
  • 15-25°F: medium zone, to assess per installation
  • > 25°F: hard water, softener recommended
  • Target setting: 8-12°F, never 0°F

Sizing correctly: resin volume vs household

The heart of a softener is its resin volume (in litres), not the size of the salt tank. The right volume depends on the number of people, water hardness and peak flow (number of water points used simultaneously).

Oversizing is not harmless: a unit that is too big rarely regenerates, the resin stagnates and can become contaminated. Undersizing forces frequent regenerations, which wear and consume.

  • 1-2 people: ~10-12 L of resin
  • 3-4 people: ~16-20 L of resin
  • 5-6 people: ~25-30 L of resin
  • Very hard water (>35°F) or high flow: move up a size

Salt resin, CO2 or « salt-free »: the truth

The resin and salt softener (ion exchange) is the only one that actually reduces hardness: it replaces calcium and magnesium with sodium. It is the reference for protecting boiler and heating elements.

CO2 systems lower the pH and keep the limescale in solution without removing it — interesting in a flat or without discharge to the sewer, but they do not soften in the strict sense.

« Salt-free » magnetic or electronic devices do not change the measured hardness: at best they alter the shape of the crystals. To be reserved for cases where nothing else can be installed, without expecting the performance of a true softener.

Maintenance, salt and real cost

A well-set softener needs little: check the salt level and top up once a month, check the output hardness with a test kit, and do an annual service (resin disinfection, valve check).

Salt consumption depends on hardness and household. For a 4-person household in hard water, expect generally 150 to 250 kg of salt per year, a modest annual cost compared to the damage avoided on the boiler and taps.

  • Regenerating salt tablets only (never de-icing salt)
  • Output hardness check every 1-2 months
  • Annual service/disinfection recommended

Which brands to prefer

On the Belgian market, the safe bets are BWT, Culligan, Cillit, Syr, Judo and Grünbeck. All offer volumetric units (regeneration on volume consumed, more economical than timer-based models).

Prefer a proportional volumetric unit, a reliable valve and an after-sales network present in BE/LU for parts. The purchase price matters less than the availability of consumables and repairs over 10-15 years.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the water in Belgium?

It varies by municipality. Much of Flanders and Brussels sits around 30 to 40 °F, meaning hard to very hard water. Some Walloon areas on limestone exceed these values still. Below 15 °F water is soft and a softener is rarely useful.

Salt or salt-free softener?

Only the resin and salt softener actually reduces hardness through ion exchange and protects boiler and heating elements. CO2 systems limit scaling without softening, and salt-free magnetic or electronic devices do not change the measured hardness. For real protection, choose a salt-based unit.

What size softener for 4 people?

For a 4-person household, aim generally for 16 to 20 litres of resin. With very hard water (over 35 °F) or two bathrooms and a high flow, move up a size and check that the unit's rated flow reaches at least 2.5 to 3 m³/h.

What is the salt consumption per year?

For a 4-person household in hard water, expect around 150 to 250 kg of salt tablets per year. The exact amount depends on water hardness and consumption. A volumetric unit, which regenerates according to the volume actually consumed, optimises this consumption.
